ISP-by-the-minute?The deal with BAMnet is that you dial an 800-number (or a simple 10-10-2000 if you are in the Northeast) to connect to their servers. In exchange, they charge you 6.5 cents per minute, which is just added to your monthly phone bill. You may be thinking, “I get unlimited usage from AOL for $22 a month. Why would I want to pay per minute?” Well, for those that have to actually pay for their local calls or don’t have an AOL number that is local to them, then BAMnet is a great deal. For example, Cape May County in Southern New Jersey does not have a local AOL number and must dial up into a different town for access, which incurs a toll charge. Cape May-ers could also dial AOL’s 800-number, but this is 10 cents a minute for only 28.8K access; BAMnet provides 56K access as well as a cheaper rate! How does it work exactly? Well, this is the best part about it. All you need to do is start a new Windows dial-up connection, enter the provided phone number and wait for it to connect. No remembering a user name or password. No sign-up process that requires you to enter the dimensions of your index fingernail. Nothing! Don’t have an e-mail address yet? Just use one of the multitudes of free ones (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.). Yes, I know there are free ISP’s available. However, these require a long sign-up process, are not available in every city, and have a lot of extra advertising, which can drastically slow down your connection when you want every bit of speed you can get. BAMnet is also great for those people who use the Internet very rarely or do all of their web surfing at work. In either case, they don’t feel it is worth it to pay a monthly ISP fee. To equal the cost of a $20-a-month Internet account, you would have to use BAMnet about 10 minutes each day of the month. If you use the Internet less frequently than that, then you should jump on the “BAM” wagon and look into using this new service! Check out www.bamnet.com or www.10-10-2000.com for more info.
