CoffeeCup Software Kills Messenger Service Spam

Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- CoffeeCup Software Inc., today announced the launch of a new software program called DirectAd Blocker, designed to stop annoying new pop-up advertisements that will soon be invading desktops around the world.

Traditionally, Internet spamming techniques have involved unwanted advertisements being sent through email and Internet browsers. The New DirectAds are messages sent DIRECTLY to your computer. They are not email messages or pop-ups through your browser. They are "completely anonymous and virtually untraceable" and can pop up on your computer at any time. As if overflowing email boxes and pop-up ads covering your entire browser window weren't frustrating enough, this marketing bombardment promises to test your patience. As reported on CNN, "a developer of bulk-mail software has figured out how to blast computers with pop-up spam over the Internet through a messaging function on many Windows operating systems. But there's a difference: Anyone can send the messages, and there's no need for the user to have an Internet browser open."

How do DirectAds work?
By tapping into Messenger Service, a service originally designed to enable system administrators to send messages to users on a network, a new program called Direct Advertiser can deliver these ads straight to your computer screen.

If you use DSL, Cable Modem or Dial-Up connectivity to the Internet and are not behind a network security device, your computer is vulnerable. Messenger Service is enabled by default on Windows 2000, NT and XP systems, and optional on Windows 95, 98, and ME. This means that millions of systems are vulnerable to the pop-ups, also known as DirectAds.
