Video Camera Solution for Handhelds and Mobile Phones

Video Capture and Playback Becomes a Reality for Handhelds Using SANYO CCD Camera and MQ-1168 Heralding a New Age in Multimedia Communications Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- MediaQ, Inc., and SANYO Semiconductor Corporation today announced a collaborative effort aimed at making video messaging an important application for the next generation of handheld devices. The combined solution of SANYO CCD cameras and MediaQ's MQ-1168 multimedia platform controller would accelerate the introduction of real time video recording and playback capabilities on PDA's and smart mobile phones.

SANYO's iGT99263 camera module measures just one-seventh of an inch (11.2mm x 11.2mm x 6.7mm). With 110,000 pixels, the mounted CCD image sensor rivals the performance of CMOS image sensors, yet consumes far less power; the module uses just 90mW when shooting at 15 frames/sec. The 5lx object luminance of the CCD image sensor allows users to capture clear images in a wide variety of light and dark conditions, without the assistance of a flash.

MediaQ's MQ-1168 Multimedia Platform Controller provides the ability to playback and display video and still images on a variety of Handheld devices including PDA's and next generation mobile phones. Key features include the capture of video through a dedicated video-input port, the ability to scale video up or down for display and transport requirements, and embedded memory video buffering scheme for clean, smooth images without image tearing. The chip also handles backend video processing capabilities like color space conversion in hardware significantly improving system performance and reducing power consumption.

MediaQ MQ-1168
MediaQ's MQ-1168 Multimedia Platform Controller combines true multimedia capabilities, low power consumption, and a rich set of peripheral interfaces for connectivity and storage. End-users of PDAs, Smart Phones, and other mobile devices benefit from faster system performance, higher quality audio and video playback, and extended battery life.

The MQ-1168 is the first chip to completely offload memory-intensive multimedia and peripheral operations from the CPU, resulting in higher performance and lower power consumption. To further enhance multimedia performance, MQ-1168 features Hardware Accelerated Resource Engines (HARE) dedicated to video and graphics functions. These specialized engines are specifically designed for small footprint, battery-operated devices.

Hardware Accelerated 2D Graphics and Multimedia Processing
MQ-1168 makes video capture and playback a reality for handheld devices with a built-in video input module, a dedicated 8-bit video input port, and a video engine called StretchBLT. Any CCIR656-compliant video -- either from the dedicated video input port or from the CPU -- can now be handled in hardware. The MQ-1168 performs advanced functions like color space conversion and image scaling in hardware, which otherwise would tie up the entire CPU if executed in software. MQ-1168 also features a 64-bit accelerated 2D graphics engine that supports the 256 ROP (Raster Operations) as defined by Microsoft. Most of the drawing functions are hardware accelerated, including BitBLT, Bresenham line draw, panning and scrolling, pattern fills, and transparencies.
