Sprint and Samsung Launch the SPH-a400 GPS-Enabled Wireless Handset

The Sprint PCS SPH-a400 by Samsung Gives Consumers a Stylish Device Equipped With Unique Personalization Features and Designed to Support Future E911 Services Feb. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wireless customers can now combine high-tech GPS-enabled wireless technology and highly stylish personalized ringtones and screen savers with the clarity of Sprint's nationwide wireless network in the new SPH-a400 by Samsung.

Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS), which operates the largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide network and is the fastest growing wireless carrier, and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung), a wireless industry leader ranked as one of the best in handset value and customer satisfaction, today introduced the sophisticated, feature-rich GPS-enabled Sprint PCS Phone SPH-a400 by Samsung. The SPH-a400 is available at Sprint Stores nationwide for $199.99.

The SPH-a400 is designed to support E911 emergency services, as they become available. The SPH-a400 will dial 911 today, but the GPS-enabled, 911 location functionality is currently available in Rhode Island only. The location functionality will roll out in conjunction with local public safety agencies on a case-by-case basis. Sprint customers also can take advantage of the new Sprint PCS Ringers & More(SM) wireless download service to personalize their phone and reflect their individual style by downloading the best in brand-name content as ringers and screen savers.

Sprint PCS customers can browse the Ringers & More content at sprintpcs.com or through the Sprint PCS Wireless Web on the a400 and then wirelessly download content such as chart-topping hits or well-known cartoon images to be saved as customized ringers or screen savers on the a400. There are no additional charges for the first three months and costs $4 per month following that initial trial period. Sprint wireless customers can download up to eight pieces of content from the Ringers & More service and store it in their personal "vault" each month.

On the a400's large, 6-line screen and crisp 4-level grayscale display, the downloaded images will appear well defined, while the phone's text messages and menu selections are clearer and easier to read. Consumers also will notice an intuitive user interface on the a400, as well as a directional navigation key for convenient navigation throughout the menu screens.

Equipped with the Openwave Mobile Browser 4.1 and one-touch Internet access, the dual-band/dual-mode a400 allows users to easily connect to the Internet and view 8 lines of text while browsing the Web to check flight schedules, sports scores or movie listings. Consumers can also view and send email wirelessly, as well as utilize the a400's built-in personal organizer to keep track of appointments, set reminders for important dates and input to-do lists.

In addition, the phone book holds up to 250 entries, and the voice- activation feature on the a400 makes it as easy to place a call as saying a name aloud.

Weighing in at 3.5 ounces, the a400's slim and lightweight design makes it the perfect size to fit in a purse or slip into a shirt pocket. Despite its diminutive size, the a400 gives consumers the power for up to 3.6 hours of talk time and up to 7 days of stand-by time with the lithium ion battery.
