SavaJe Launches Full Java Client Smartphone Operating System

March 18, 2002--SavaJe Technologies today announced its entry into the smartphone market with two unnamed Asian and European customers. SavaJe OS Smartphone Edition is the world's first operating system to support the complete set of Java APIs -- from MIDP to J2SE -- on handheld and wireless devices. The operating system, designed from the ground up to run Java on small devices, incorporates all necessary elements to build the ultimate client smartphone, and features a graphical user interface designed for smartphones, full Java security, a universal messaging system, full browser, PIM, and support for advanced rich media formats, including MP3 and MPEG4. As phones and other wireless devices continue to rapidly evolve into interactive internet clients that provide operators with attractive revenue-generating possibilities from premium services, the need has emerged for handsets that provide the same level of functionality as PC internet clients. SavaJe OS Smartphone Edition gives network operators a Java platform on which they can immediately deploy rich Java-based applications and services, and the extensibility to support future premium applications and services. A number of manufacturers have already evaluated SavaJe OS and two are currently building next-generation handsets scheduled for shipment in Q4 2002.

"Java has made enormous in-roads into the mobile phone market, and is the preferred application platform for tens of millions of handsets that will ship this year," said George Grey, CEO, SavaJe Technologies. "Network operators realize that operating systems that evolved from PDA products do not offer the functionality needed to provide users with a rich menu of data-intensive entertainment and transaction services in a totally secure environment. SavaJe OS Smartphone Edition addresses this need directly, and is available today."
