McAfee Wireless Anti-Virus to Protect Nokia Communicator Users
McAfee Extends On-Device Wireless Anti-Virus Support to Symbian-Based Internet
Connected Wireless Devices
July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Delivering virus protection
for all leading wireless platforms, McAfee, a division of
Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA), today announced that its VirusScan
Wireless product will provide anti-virus support for the Nokia 9210
Communicator currently shipping in Europe, and the Nokia 9290 Communicator
that will soon ship in the Americas. McAfee's wireless anti-virus product
will deliver "on-device" virus protection for the Symbian wireless platform
that powers Nokia's new Internet connected wireless device, scanning for
viruses in both WAP and HTML Internet communication.
McAfee's resident "micro engine" design tailored for wireless Internet devices is based on the industry-leading McAfee VirusScan technology. The engine will examine files and applications for viruses and malicious code locally on the 9210 and 9290 Communicators. The VirusScan Wireless product will have the ability to automatically update the virus definition files through the Nokia Communicator's Internet connection capability.
"As many enterprise IT organizations plan on deploying their corporate applications through wireless handheld or smart phone handset devices, virus protection will become an essential element for their wireless projects," said Stacey Wu, senior industry analyst, Mobile Insights, Inc. "Carriers focusing on wireless data platform development would also need to protect the wireless data transactions and end users' devices."
"McAfee has been on the forefront in providing the greatest level of virus protection to users of wireless, Internet connected devices," said Mark Harris, chief software architect for McAfee. "The small resident scanning engine that currently protects Palm handheld and mobile Internet devices has been engineered to look for viruses and malicious code that may live within files transferred and accessed on the Nokia Communicator."
The Nokia Communicator is an integrated mobile terminal combining phone, fax, e-mail, calendar, and imaging functionality. Internet access is possible via both a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and a HTML-based browser, which also supports frames. Along with included word processing and spreadsheet applications, support for many of the most used PC applications, including viewing and editing of Microsoft Word and Excel documents, and a PowerPoint viewer, is built into the Nokia Communicator.
McAfee is a division of Network Associates, Inc. that protects e-businesses from security breaches and virus attacks. McAfee has aggressively focused on the burgeoning mobile and wireless marketplace, developing the VirusScan Wireless family of products. McAfee is also actively addressing the service provider market through McAfee ASaP, which offers Internet security and virus protection.
