Dell Expands Desktop Computer Line with Two Space-Saving Products
May 21, 2003 -- Big performance in small packages is the hallmark of two new Dell Dimension desktop computers introduced in the United States today.
First available to consumers and small business customers in Japan, the Dimension 4600C, with its small form factor chassis, is now available to customers in the United States. Its minitower counterpart, the Dimension 4600, also features a compact chassis, but offers nearly the same level of expandability as its predecessor, the Dimension 4550.
"Consumers and small businesses tell us every day they need versatile desktops that occupy less space," said Mark Vena, director of Dimension product marketing. "These two new products fill that need, and have the power to handle digital photo editing, management of a music collections, creation of digital video, and other multimedia tasks, as well as standard office productivity applications."
At less than 13 inches tall, the Dimension 4600C is 60 percent smaller than the 4600 and the smallest Dimension chassis the company has offered in the United States. Its size makes it an ideal system for use in dorm rooms, apartments or any place where space is limited. It features eight USB 2.0 ports, two of which are front-accessible, that make it easy for customers to connect devices like digital cameras, external hard drives and MP3 players.
Customers who require even more external expandability can order the 4600C with an optional PCI card that includes a modem, two front-accessible PCMCIA slots and two IEEE 1394 ports, one of which is front-accessible. This card allows customers to easily connect their digital video camera or import digital photos directly from a Compact Flash memory card.
Pricing Information
Starting at $799, the Dimension 4600 contains all the functionality of the 4600C and offers more internal expandability options. It can accommodate up to two optical drives, such as a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW; two internal hard drives; sound cards like the Creative Labs Audigy 2; and graphic cards such as the Radeon 9800 for consumers who want to play the latest 3-D games at smooth frame rates.
For $1,129, the Dimension 4600 includes a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB DDR-SDRAM memory at 333 MHz, a 60 GB hard drive, a 16X DVD drive, and 17" (16.0" viewable) CRT monitor.
