Ericsson, Cingular Wireless Bring The Mobile Internet to Life at Comdex 2000

Nov. 10 -- Ericsson will demonstrate next-generation wireless services over Cingular Wireless' live General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network during Fall Comdex 2000, November 13-17 in Las Vegas. Cingular Wireless' GPRS service, a first step toward true mobile Internet, is the first in the United States to run over a live third generation digital network. The live demonstrations, shown on Ericsson R520 GPRS terminals, will show attendees how they can expect to use the mobile Internet in their everyday lives. Three distinct situations - a road warrior at an airport gate, a youth at a shopping mall and a professional working from a home office -- will show how ordinary people will benefit from the applications, the ability for constant connection and the higher data speeds GPRS brings.
"The Cingular Wireless GPRS network gives us the capability to demonstrate several exciting next-generation wireless applications," said Per-Arne Sandstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ericsson Inc. "As a result, Comdex attendees will have a real, live look at the promise of the mobile Internet."

"GPRS is the first phase toward Cingular Wireless delivering third generation wireless capability," said Bill Clift, Chief Technology Officer, Cingular Wireless. Third generation services will provide higher speed, packet data services that will enable Cingular to offer new, richer applications to our customers. "This will bring the fastest available wireless telecommunications technology to our customers and will help fulfill the promise of the wireless Internet."

Cingular Wireless currently offers mobile internet service in California, Nevada and North Carolina. GPRS enabled service will be available throughout the PacBell Wireless network in the first quarter of 2001. During Comdex, Ericsson will show mobile Internet applications in its main booth (Booth L3041, Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall) and at the Ericsson Developer Pavilion (Room LN252, Las Vegas Convention Center, Second Floor, North Hall). Ericsson will also show demonstrations with the launch of Drive to 3G, a miniaturized version of Ericsson's trade show in a truck. The truck will be directly across from the Las Vegas Convention Center at the corner of Paradise and Convention Center Drive for the show's duration. Ericsson is the leading communications supplier, combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating the new era of mobile Internet.
