Audiovox Announces 9155GPX: 1XRTT Handset With GPS

Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Audiovox Communications Corporation (ACC), a subsidiary of Audiovox Corporation (Nasdaq: VOXX), and a 2001 U.S. leader in CDMA (code division multiple access) handsets according to Dataquest, today announced its first GPS-enabled, 3G handset -- the 9155GPX. The 9155GPX is a CDMA tri-mode (800 MHz CDMA, 1900 MHz PCS and 800 MHz AMPS), web-enabled, 1XRTT capable handset equipped with the MSM5100 chipset that has Bluetooth capability and gpsOne(TM)-based position location.

"As one of the first wireless phones to combine GPS location positioning which complies with the FCC's E-911 directives, wireless Internet and the strength of a CDMA platform, the 9155GPX will set the new standard for wireless handsets," said Philip Christopher, President and CEO of Audiovox Communications Corp.

The 9155GPX is feature-rich yet compact and user friendly. A form factor similar to Audiovox's flagship tri-mode phone, the CDM-9100, makes the 9155GPX both attractive and lightweight. Beyond its good looks, the 9155GPX boasts the latest technological advances. The phone is 3G CDMA2000 1XRTT* capable to enable high speed wireless connectivity of up to 153 kpbs for web browsing, email and mobile e-commerce functions, as well as simultaneous reception of audio, video and text data. The 9155GPX is equipped with the MSM5100 chipset which features gpsOne position location technology enabling compatible carriers to track a handset user's location.

The handset also features web browser UP 4.1, two-way short message service (SMS)*, voice activated dialing and a two-way speakerphone.

According to Mr. Christopher, Audiovox will debut the 9155GPX at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the handset will be $299, although carrier subsidies may result in lower retail pricing.

"This will be, without question, one of the most technologically advanced handsets for the U.S. wireless market," Mr. Christopher noted. "9155GPX is more than a phone for early adopters, it is where most wireless handsets will be in the near future, with position location, wireless networking and high- speed data capabilities. Audiovox is pleased to lead the way."
