Yamaha’s New DVX-S100: A Host of Features in a Small Package

January 2002—Yamaha, the innovator of Digital Sound Field Processing and surround technology, has announced the addition of the DVX-S100 DVD Home Cinema System to its growing line of Home Theater in a Box surround sound systems. The DVX-S100 is designed for those that like simplicity and ease in a surround-sound system. This slim unit is actually a Progressive Scan DVD Audio Player with an imbedded high-performance 5.1 channel 35Wx5 amplifier, a built-in Dolby Digital/Dolby ProLogic II/DTS decoder, a five speaker package, plus a separate 50-watt powered subwoofer and a preset remote control.

With its enhanced directional steering, Dolby Pro Logic II provides 5-channel surround processing from any stereo source-even from two-channel CDs, tapes, VHS and LPs--and delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels (20 Hz - 20 kHz) with 40 dB of left-right separation. The built-in receiver is able to deliver sophisticated internal surround decoding and DSP processing enabled by the YSS-938, a newly developed 32-bit Floating-Point LSI (with 41 variations of 21 surround sound modes).

The receiver also features Cinema DSP, which provides an audio experience that not only sounds like a theater, but actually sounds better than most theaters. Cinema DSP is designed to bring out the full potential of movie sound formats, reproducing them the way directors and sound engineers intended them to be heard. And, for listening to late-night multi-channel presentations in privacy, it utilizes unique Silent Cinema, which provides a 5.1 channel listening experience using a pair of ordinary 2-channel headphones.

Moreover, 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters are used for all 5 channels (Main Left/Right, Center, Rear Left/Right, and Subwoofer).

The built-in receiver also features 40-station AM/FM Random Access Preset Tuning, a sleep timer, a headphone jack and bass boost switch.

In addition to Progressive Scan, which delivers higher resolution video, the DVD Audio player features an advanced on screen menu system for easy operation and utilizes a high quality 10-bit DAC and 96 kHz/24-bit audio DACs. In addition to Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams, the changer can output a 2-channel analog audio signal; provide digital and analog signals simultaneously and play CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW/+RW discs.

The speaker package included with the DVX-S100 features four satellite speakers with four-inch drivers and half-inch dome tweeters, maximum 70W handling power, and a triple-woofer center speaker with one inch tweeter.

The 50W Advanced YST subwoofer features an eight-inch Spruce cone driver, variable crossover, an auto on/off power switch and two pin jack input connections.

The DVX-S100 will be available at Yamaha retailers in June at a suggested retail price of $999.
