Soltronix Solar-Powered Consumer Electronics to be Launched at CES 2002
January 7-- Iowa Thin Film Technologies announced it will be launching its full line of Soltronix solar-powered consumer electronics at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 8-11.Soltronix combines quality electronics with the breakthrough PowerFilm™ portable power system that eliminates the cost and inconvenience of replacing batteries. PowerFilm is a patented thin film solar module developed from NASA spin-off technology, and is ultra-light, flexible, and durable.
The Soltronix line includes the HR-1 FM Stereo/AM Headphone Radio, PR-1 Pocket Radio, MP3CD-1 MP3/CD Player, and the CD-1 CD Player.
“The benefits of photovoltaic technology have been known for years yet mainstream products have been lacking. I enjoy listening to music on my portable CD player and radio, but I hate replacing all those throw-away batteries. It’s good to be able to use PowerFilm to solve that battery problem,” said Frank Jeffrey, President of Iowa Thin Film Technologies.
Soltronix products can be used inside and outside, and day or night. The PowerFilm flexible solar module automatically recharges the batteries that are included with the products. The complete system supplies power for an extended period. For example, the HR-1 headphone radio will play over 30 hours on a full charge.
“It really is a new style in power that gives consumers the opportunity to eliminate the hassles of batteries--and to do something good for the environment. The market response to our headphone radio has been strong, and we’re projecting even stronger demand for our new products. We’re also developing PowerFilm solutions for cell phone chargers and personal digital assistants (PDA’s),” said Mike Coon, Chief Operating Officer.
The PowerFilm modules are based upon amorphous silicon technology applied to a durable polymer substrate 2 mils (0.05mm) thick using a true roll-to-roll manufacturing process. Finished modules are encapsulated in materials appropriate for the application environment.
