Lexar Media CompactFlash Cards Power Compaq's New iPAQ Navigation System
Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Lexar Media, Inc. (Nasdaq: LEXR), a leading
developer of flash mass storage systems and an innovator of high-performance,
USB-enabled CompactFlash(TM) digital film, announced today that Compaq
Computer Corporation will use Lexar Media High-Speed CompactFlash in its first
iPAQ branded in-car personal navigation system, the iPAQ Navigation System
(iNS). The iNS is the first iPAQ-based global positioning system (GPS) in
Europe that gives voice directions and has clear advantages over in-board
systems, both in terms of cost and performance. Lexar Media 64MB and 128MB
CompactFlash cards are integral to the iNS system, storing highly-detailed
maps for the majority of the U.K
"This application demonstrates a growing trend in using CompactFlash as a
medium for long-term archiving of important information due to its incredible
stability. A Lexar Media CompactFlash card can be used for over 100 years and
store millions of files," said Tessa Board, managing director, Lexar Media
Europe. "Lexar Media CompactFlash was selected not only for its superior
reliability but for its ability to retrieve map files fast and efficiently.
We are pleased to be selected by Compaq for the iNS."
The iNS provides swift, reliable routing that guides the user to their destination. Because the iNS operates on a Compaq handheld PC and maps stored by Lexar Media CompactFlash cards, users can easily transfer their personal navigation system between different cars. All systems are voice-enabled -- an important auto safety feature -- and boast 'plug and play' operation which eliminates costly professional dashboard installation. Each iNS also provides postcode routing.
"The iPAQ Navigation System will prove revolutionary for vehicle users, as it combines GPS navigation and portable computing at a very reasonable price. We are looking forward to extending the product's reach from the U.K. to other regions and countries, and from consumers to business users -- particularly those with large sales forces or commercial fleets, etc. The Lexar Media CompactFlash card used in the iNS is portable, comes in high capacities and features highly reliable solid-state storage," said Justin Young, a wireless spokesmen from Compaq.
Lexar Media guarantees fast, stable and reliable data storage for its complete line of solid-state CompactFlash. Lexar Media cards are guaranteed compatible with CompactFlash host devices and are USB-enabled to provide quick and easy file transfer. All 12X High-Speed series consumer digital storage cards come with a five-year warranty and all 16X Pro Series cards come with a lifetime warranty. Lexar Media is the only company to individually test and speed rate all CompactFlash cards, following the X-speed rating convention used by the CD ROM industry. Presently, the Company markets 4X, 12X and 16X speed cards, available in capacities up to 640MB. Using the X-speed convention, files transfer at minimum sustained rates of 600KB, 1.8MB and 2.4MB per second respectively.
