Gemstar-TV Guide and LG Electronics Sign Interactive Program Guide Agreement

January 7, 2004 - Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. and LG Electronics have signed a multi-year agreement under which LG has licensed the right to incorporate TV Guide On Screen, Gemstar-TV Guide's interactive program guide (IPG) for consumer electronics, into digital television products.

Under the agreement, the licensed products include LG-brand integrated digital sets, digital video recorders (DVRs) and DVD recorders sold in North America. Among the first LG products to incorporate TV Guide Onscreen will be a new HDTV DVR and a unique 60-inch rear-projection LCD integrated HDTV with a built-in DVR. Both will be introduced this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV, where they also will be honored with CES 2004 Innovations Awards. (TV Guide On Screen will be demonstrated in these products at the LG Electronics booth #8314, Central Hall.) Selected HDTV products sold under LG's Zenith brand also are covered by the license agreement.

"LG's leading-edge digital television products are the perfect complement to our IPG technology," said Doug Macrae, president, TV Guide Consumer Electronics. "This agreement represents another big step forward for TV Guide On Screen and reflects consumer electronics manufacturers' growing interest in incorporating our IPG into their expanding product lines. We look forward to continuing to provide LG customers with an easy and convenient way to navigate their television viewing and recording options."

Richard Lewis, Senior Vice President, LG Electronics USA, Inc., hailed the Gemstar-TV Guide agreement as "another enhancement to LG's digital HDTV product offerings," adding: "Seamless navigation, recording flexibility and viewing convenience are what the interactive program guide platform is all about. This IPG enhances the digital experience for the high-end consumers LG is attracting with our broad digital HDTV product line."

TV Guide On Screen is an interactive program guide that is built directly into consumer electronics products, including digital, plasma and LCD televisions, digital video recorders (DVRs) and DVD recorders. The guide offers interactive on-screen program listings from TV Guide, the most trusted name in program listings, that enable viewers to quickly and easily navigate, sort, select, and schedule television programming for viewing and recording, all with simple remote control commands.

TV Guide On Screen's patented technology delivers continuously updated program listings to users, regardless of whether they receive their television signal via cable or over-the-air broadcast. TV Guide On Screen works by simply plugging in the television or recording device and activating the guide through an express set-up process. The guide requires no subscription or phone connection and is available at no extra cost to the consumer.

Under the agreement, LG Electronics will pay license fees to Gemstar-TV Guide based on the number of units sold that include the licensed technology.
