Saddle Sore No More

MoonSaddle April 2007 -- If you've ridden on a teardrop-shaped bike seat for as long as you've known, why would you try something new? We all seem to be creatures of habit and doing the unfamiliar may not “sit” well with us, even if carries with it the possibility of avoiding pain, possible genital numbness, erectile dysfunction, or low sperm count.

For male cyclists who've experienced the discomfort and even health risks of riding on a traditional "horned" bike seat too long, there's now an innovative bike seat designed by an avid biker to protect male anatomy, including his own. The MoonSaddle is specifically engineered to eliminate the soreness, genital numbness, erectile dysfunction, and low sperm count associated with prolonged use of traditional bike seats, which are linked in scientific studies to a significant decrease in penile blood flow while seated.

Bike riders typically rest their weight directly on an area where the nerves and arteries enter the genitals. "Straddling compresses the nerves and arteries…which frequently results in complaints of numbness in the penile/scrotal area after cycling," states Irwin Goldstein, MD, a sexual dysfunction researcher and former professor of urology at the Boston University School of Medicine. Straddling may also lead to compromised blood supply to the penis over an unknown time period, resulting in erectile dysfunction.

While gel and padded seats may cushion the pressure traditional bike seats place in the genital area, they don't solve the problem because they don't eliminate it. Instead, the MoonSaddle's anatomy-friendly design uses the body's own skeletal system for natural support, putting an end to painful, prolonged seat straddling and protecting male riders' vascular and nervous systems from possible trauma and the health risks associated with it.

Because the seat supports the bike rider's weight on the bones you feel when you sit, which have no attached organs, nerves, or arteries and are surrounded by the fat and muscle of the buttocks, riders can sit safely and comfortably for hours. Combined with contoured seat design featuring a "valley" that allows space for male anatomy, this helps eliminate the genital numbness, erectile dysfunction, and low sperm count associated with prolonged use of traditional bike seats.

Because the hornless bike seat, shaped like a crescent moon lying on its side, optimizes weight distribution for performance and comfort, cyclists can ride farther and longer than on traditional bike seats. The MoonSaddle can be mounted with the points of the crescent moon facing forward. However, 95% of bike riders prefer mounting the seat with the points to the rear, this provides the rider with greater comfort and support for the buttocks, along with greater stability for longer rides or training sessions.

Because the new design allows for more adjustment than typical bike seats, it is suitable for all ages and body types, including women and children. Its framework coupled with rails that are made from high tensile stainless steel provide strength and support. Its waterproof, scuff resistant GrizHideTM, elastomer surface, with UV inhibitors for fade resistance, combines comfort with durability. The MoonSaddle attaches to most bikes in minutes with common tools.
