Toshiba Launches New Convertible Notebook for Students and Small Business Professionals
June 27, 2006 — Toshiba’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the Satellite® R25-S3503, a new convertible notebook for the retail market with the robust performance of a desktop computer and extra security features.
Students and small business professionals alike will appreciate the power and flexibility of the Satellite R25-S3503 convertible notebook, allowing them to work with a traditional keyboard or rotate and fold the screen down for use as a Tablet PC with digital pen-based input and control. A digitizer pen allows the user to handwrite notes, draw, edit copy or write e-mail or input data while standing, sitting or reclining. It can convert handwriting to text or just record your own handwriting. The 14.1-inch Tablet display roughly simulates the writing area of a standard 8.5- by 11-inch sheet of paper to provide optimal room for note-taking and drawing.
For the first time in a Toshiba Satellite convertible notebook, the Satellite R25-S3503 offers Intel® Core™ Duo Mobile Technologies, docking capabilities as well as Toshiba’s exclusive LifeSmart Technology™, a set of features that elevate system performance, durability and security with shock-absorbing technologies to protect the hard drive, a spill-resistant keyboard, and fingerprint security.
Starting at 5.95 pounds, the Satellite R25-S3503 features a 14.1-inch diagonal widescreen TruBrite™ LCD display, the Intel Core Duo Processor T2050 and the Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 operating system.
The inclusion of the latest Intel Centrino® Mobile Technology enhances overall system performance from graphics to wireless capabilities while reducing power consumption. Other features found in the Satellite R25-S3503 Tablet PC include:
- a DVD SuperMulti Double Layer drive that reads and writes in up to 11 formats that can nearly double a recordable DVD’s storage capacity for photo, music and video files in either DVD+R or DVD-R double layer formats;
- 100GB high-capacity 5400 rpm Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive for faster access to stored files;
- 5-in-1 bridge media adapter for easy file sharing and download
“Students and small business executives will be pleased with the large amount of screen real estate the Satellite R25-S3503 offers, providing plenty of display space for pen-based input,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing for Toshiba’s Digital Products Division. “With the addition of the latest Intel Centrino Mobile Technology and LifeSmart Technology, consumers will also notice a big difference in the speed of their applications, longer battery life and additional security of their system.”
“With consumers increasingly replacing desktops with notebooks, a lighter convertible notebook with a full set of features and good battery life is well positioned for retail,” said Roger Kay, president, Endpoint Technologies Associates, Inc.
Toshiba’s LifeSmart Technology provides a rich cushion of hardware and software enhancements for personal notebooks that increase security, stability, performance, wireless connectivity and overall ease-of-use. It includes the following four elements:
Check Up
- shock-absorbing materials to help safeguard critical components such as the hard drive and LCD display
- the Toshiba Hard Disk Drive Protection System to help safeguard the notebook hard drive against possible damage resulting from accidental dropping, turbulence, impact or vibration;
- spill-resistant keyboard that affords users time to save work and shut down the system. If an accident should occur, this feature will help prevent the loss of data;
Lock Up
- integrated biometric fingerprint reader with single sign-on functionality;
Quick Up
- a complete suite of communication technologies, including modem, LAN and the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (802.11 a/b/g);
- proprietary technologies such as Toshiba’s recently upgraded ConfigFree®, a graphic connectivity management utility, and the company’s patented Diversity Antenna, designed to deliver superior, wireless signal reception through the dual-band Wi-Fi® antennas in the notebook’s display;
Tune Up
- a group of utilities that enables users to better control and manage individual settings on their notebooks for a more personalized mobile computing experience;
- includes zooming utility and FN shortcut keys;
- Toshiba’s Presentation button, a one-touch button to display the screen’s image onto an LCD projector or external monitor easily;
- and wireless on/off switch, enabling and disabling the integrated wireless LAN (Wi-Fi).
The Satellite R25-S3503 also includes four USB 2.0, iLINK™ IEEE 1394, RGB output, RJ-11 modem, RJ-45 LAN, headphone and microphone ports. The product has an estimated single unit price (ESUP) of $1349.
The Satellite R25-S3503 Tablet PC comes with a standard one-year limited warranty. The standard limited warranty includes carry-in support at Authorized Service Providers throughout the country, or the customer may use any of the more than 3,000 UPS Stores for packaging and delivery of the product to a centralized depot for prompt service turnaround. Customers can also choose to upgrade the notebook’s service plans, including up to four years of extended service plans.
Included Microsoft Office OneNote™ 2003 software enables users to better capture, organize, find and share notes gathered from e-mail, meetings, presentations, classes, the Web and other sources. OneNote captures virtually any type of information — ranging from handwritten or typed notes to audio — in a single convenient place.
The new Satellite R25-S3503 is currently available from ToshibaDirect (www.toshibadirect.com) and will be available from major consumer electronics and computer stores nationwide in July. Port replicators are available separately from ToshibaDirect.com.
