AOL Launches Customized Email Addresses

September 14, 2006 – Email is one of the most popular online activities, yet many consumers don't have an online identity that's truly personal and meaningful to them – until now. Today, AOL launched My eAddress, the first service that lets Internet users create their own email address for free, for example, you@theynameyouwant.com.

Available now at www.aol.com, AOL My eAddress allows anyone to set up a completely customized email address using .COM or .NET domains, and add up to 100 additional identities onto that personal domain. As long as it's available, AOL will cover the registration at no cost to users.

"Great email domains are a hot commodity, and we're excited to be able to finally help consumers create their own truly meaningful Internet identities – and for free,” said Roy Ben-Yoseph, Director of Communication Products, AOL. "It's a perfect solution for families, social organizations and even small businesses – as well as any individual who relies on email to communicate with others on an ongoing basis.”

Consumers can use their My eAddress domain as an email address, as their AIM® address to send and receive instant messages and access their Buddy List® feature, to access features across the AOL® network, and, coming soon, as the address of their own personal Web page on the free AIM® Pages social networking service. In addition, My eAddress includes industry-leading spam and anti-virus protection, 2 GB of email storage, access from any Web-enabled computer, an Address Book that also includes presence indication to see when contacts are online and able to receive instant messages, and integrated access to AOL's other free Web-based products and services.

When creating a new email domain, My eAddress will automatically suggest alternate options if the domain you're after is unavailable. Here are some additional tips for selecting a personal domain:

  • Make it personal, memorable, and succinct. The shorter the domain is, the easier it may be for people to remember (i.e., Judy@WednesdayBookClub.com.)
  • Ask for suggestions. If creating a domain for a book club or sports team, ask the other members see what creative ideas they may have (i.e., Mary@SunsetHillParents.com)
  • Get creative. If creating a family domain with a common last name like Johnson or Williams, try adding the word "the" and making it plural, or also add a word like family, gang or crew, state initials, or zip code (i.e., Grandma@JonesFamilyFL.com.)

In addition, AOL today launched a new version of AOL® Webmail, allowing individuals to choose to set up a new personalized address with the popular and widely-used AOL.com® domain, at no charge. Enhancements include updates to help make AOL Webmail easier to use and more reliable as well as easier to manage, store and share photos; and also include an integrated calendar, and integrated presence and Web-based instant messaging.

Former AOL members will be able to reactivate their screen names, if given up within the last two years, by signing into AOL Mail at www.aol.com or AOL's software.
