Sonos Adds Support for Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Vista
January 2007 – Sonos, Inc., the leading developer of wireless multi-room music systems for the digital home, just released Sonos System Software 2.1, a software update to its award-winning digital music system. The one-button software upgrade allows Sonos customers to play Windows Media Digital Rights Management-protected songs— anywhere in the home—using Windows Media Player 11 on Windows XP or Windows Vista. As a direct result of close technical collaboration with the Microsoft Windows team, Sonos 2.1 enables music lovers worldwide to enjoy music from a broad range of music download services, including AOL® Music Now, MTV Networks’ URGE, Napster™, Wal-Mart®, Yahoo! Music™ Unlimited, and the Zune Marketplace.
Sonos gives music lovers an unsurpassed home audio experience and provides access to more music services than any other whole-home digital music system on the market. With today’s announcement, Sonos customers can now enjoy music direct from the Rhapsody® Online Music Service, plus downloads from AOL Music Now, Audible.com®, eMusic®, Napster, MTV Networks’ URGE, Wal-Mart, Yahoo! Music Unlimited, the Zune Marketplace, and hundreds of Internet radio stations. Via Windows Media Sharing, Sonos customers can now access their Windows Media Player 11 library of music, enjoy that music all over the house and control it all from the palm of their hand.
"We know from our customer surveys that Sonos users in more than 60 countries are listening to more music than ever," said John MacFarlane, CEO of Sonos. “We are determined to make the entire universe of music available to our customers and today’s software release is a very big step towards this goal.” “We’re excited about the tremendous support and enthusiasm Sonos is providing for Windows Vista at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show,” said Brad Goldberg, general manager for Windows Client at Microsoft Corp. “By working closely together we are helping to provide technologies that will connect, entertain and hopefully surprise people by how easy this next generation of computing makes their lives.”
Sonos and Microsoft will be showcasing this new approach to digital music at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sonos (Booth #26422, LVCC South Hall 2) and the Microsoft Partner Pavilion (Booth #7144, LVCC Central Hall) will both have interactive demonstrations showing how music lovers can enjoy music from Windows Media Player 11 throughout the home—from the bedroom to the backyard.
In keeping with Sonos’ tradition of continually improving the music playback experience, the Sonos 2.1 software release also includes improved playlist and volume normalization support for Apple iTunes® 7.0.
