Netflix Launches 'Previews' Feature for Instant Viewing of Movie TrailersAug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Netflix today introduced a new Web site feature called "Previews" that enables Netflix members to instantly watch movie trailers that have been personalized for them based on their movie tastes. The new "Previews" section consolidates all of Netflix's movie trailers in one area on the Web site, just one click away from the member home page. Netflix's proprietary recommendation software chooses the trailers and the order in which they are shown based on individual members' movie rental and movie rating histories at Netflix. The previews run sequentially and without interruption. "Netflix 'Previews' is like every viewer in a movie theater seeing a different series of trailers based on their personal tastes," said Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt. "But it's easier because you're watching the previews on your own computer screen, wherever you want, on your own time." "This unmatched, highly personalized selection of movie previews makes it even easier for Netflix members to discover movies they'll love," Mr. Hunt added. The company said it designed the "Previews" feature to be fast, effortless and enjoyable. Netflix members can add movies to their rental queues directly from the "Previews" page and can watch the previews as often as they want as part of their normal Netflix subscription. Currently 1,000 trailers are available on "Previews" and the company said it expects to increase that number to between 5,000 and 10,000 trailers by year's end. The "Previews" page is characteristically simple in its design. Each trailer appears on a screen that suggests a movie theatre. At the bottom appear icons for "Previous," "Pause" and "Next" so members can jump to the next trailer or watch one again. Beneath those icons appear the title of the movie and an "Add" button so members can immediately add previewed movies to their Netflix rental queues. Netflix connects members with movies they will love by aligning their rental and ratings histories and the ratings of other members to make personalized recommendations. The more movies members rate, the more recommendations they receive. Netflix has been ranked the number one Web site for customer satisfaction in three independent surveys over the past two years.
