She’s at Sea – Boat Handling Course for Women
March 2005 – For the fourth consecutive year, Captain Elizabeth Jolin from Bay & Reef Company, will conduct a series of two-day seminars designed to teach women how to handle a powerboat safely, intelligently and independently. The She’s at Sea seminars, offered at Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, Florida Keys provide basic boat handling skills in a safe, non-threatening atmosphere enabling participants to reach their personal goals in terms of technical skill, passenger safety and, first and foremost, the joy of being on the water at the helm of a boat and in charge of the vessel.
Previous courses have been a huge success and Captain Jolin has added on additional dates this year to accommodate the growing interest among women in South Florida to captain their own ship. “There are very few programs offering this type of hands-on education exclusively for women,” says Jolin. “These days, many women have the ability to purchase their own boats and they want the confidence and the technical skills to operate them safely and in accordance with the maritime laws. Women are excellent students and we are proud to introduce each and every one of them to the thrill of safe boating here in South Florida as well as those who take the course here and then return to their hometowns all across the country.”
The weekend programs, sponsored by Cheeca Lodge & Spa, Caribee Marine and Boston Whaler offer hands-on curriculum combining classroom study with on-the-water training. More than seventy-five percent of the course time will be spent behind the wheel learning boat handling skills, basic engine operation, anchoring techniques and the “rules of the waves.” At the conclusion of the two-day program, women have the fundamental knowledge and the confidence to operate personal or rental powerboats with ease.
The basic two-day “She’s at Sea” courses will be offered this year on April 16-17, September 17-18, and 24-25, October 8-9 and 22-23 and November 5-6. The cost for the seminar is $375.00 per person which includes lunch each day and all course materials. There will also be an opportunity for advanced classes and an overnight boating excursion later in the season.
Participants in the program can take advantage of special She’s at Sea rates for accommodations at Cheeca Lodge & Spa, a full service resort situated on 27 beautifully landscaped acres with 1200 feet of ocean beachfront in Islamorada, Florida Keys. Cheeca Lodge & Spa offers a family pool, adults-only pool, tennis, golf, water-sports, Avanyu health spa and fitness center, children’s program plus award-winning dining in the Atlantic’s Edge Restaurant or the Ocean Terrace Grill.
