Samsung to Rock Consumers with Classic Tunes and Technology

October 10, 2005 -- Samsung Electronics America joins Rhino Entertainment and rock icons, The WHO, to launch the legendary band’s new live-in-concert DVD Box Set. From October 1 through November 30, 2005, Samsung will provide consumers with an exclusive pre-release live-in-concert DVD box set of The Who: Tommy and Quadrophenia Live with Special Guests, plus bonus footage with the purchase of select Samsung HDTVs and home theater-in-a-box systems. Consumers who purchase Samsung 1080p DLP HDTVs or 720p 61” large screen DLP TVs receive a Samsung up-conversion DVD player in addition to The Who box set. The promotion kicked off today at an exclusive press event at the Samsung Experience in NY, where Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Samsung and Rhino executives announced the alliance.

“On June 13th, 2005, The Who, featuring Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, made their only 2005 U.S. concert appearance to raise money for the roster of charities benefited by Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope. All proceeds raised were donated to family and children’s charities,” comments Peter Weedfald, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, U.S. Consumer Electronics & North American Corporate Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “We’re excited and proud to join together once again with these legendary artists to launch their historic new DVD box set. What better gift to give Samsung’s customers than a rockin’ DVD that plays on our award-winning HDTVs and home theater-in-a-box systems.”

In addition, Samsung will conduct an extensive web campaign on over 400 influential sites including a sweepstakes offering signed WHO memorabilia throughout the duration of the promotion.

The Who: Tommy & Quadrophenia Live With Special Guests DVD Box Set:
A 3-Disc boxed set available for the first time on DVD, The Who play their rock opera masterpieces live with Special Guests Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Elton John, Patti LaBelle, Steve Winwood, and PJ Proby, plus their greatest hits live. With more than 4 hours of music and 3 hours of extras, this special collectible DVD set is one of the most important music releases to date.

The set, features a live rendition of their full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy on Disc One. TOMMY was performed live in 1989 at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with special guests Elton John, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Winwood.

Disc two contains the band’s second rock opus, this time built around the story of a young mod’s struggle to come of age in the mid-’60s. This live version of Quadrophenia, from the 1996/1997 U.S. Tour was the first time it was performed as Townshend and Daltrey had visualized it, with live action and featuring Alex Langdon in a spellbinding performance as Jimmy, the disillusioned Mod.

The extras include brand-new extensive interviews with Daltrey and Townshend commenting on and interpreting these shows as they are performed. These MX Interactive Commentaries actually allow you to call Roger and Pete up on the screen whenever you wish, without having to stop the show. Other bonus features include MX designed menus, featuring souvenirs and photos of the shows, The Story of Quadrophenia as told by Aubrey Powell with documentary footage including a recently unearthed film of the band performing at a London Pub in 1964 and footage from the Quadrophenia movie, an extensive show photo gallery, and a new interview with Billy Idol.
