Samsung Introduces 61-Inch DLP Projection TV

Samsung HLM617WOctober 2002 --Samsung Electronics America, Inc. once again demonstrates its prowess in digital television technology with the introduction of the world’s largest rear projection HDTV employing Texas Instrument’s second-generation DLP technology, the HLM617W. The HLM617W is ground breaking not only for its screen size and performance, but also as the first large-screen “tabletop” rear projection HDTV, weighing in at under 120 pounds and at a depth of less than two-feet deep. The HLM617W follows the recent introduction of Samsung’s revolutionary 43” and 50” models.

“Samsung’s DLPTV product line and specifically the flagship model HLM617W blows the competition away by offering incomparable value when considering it’s light weight, slim styled cabinet and fully digital HD performance,” said Steve G. Panosian, Senior Marketing Manager for Samsung’s Visual Display Group. “It is the perfect choice for a consumer desiring a large screen, high performance TV that accepts virtually any video input including a computer signal. Because the set is powered by Texas Instruments’ second-generation DLP technology there is no threat of screen aging or ‘burn-in’ due to screen format issues or use as a computer monitor. Never before has an HDTV monitor of this size been able to deliver sharp and bright images from movies, video games, sports or DVDs in a form factor that you can sit on a shelf, or custom install in your wall.”

Thanks to Samsung’s ability to be first in the market with HDTV monitors employing Texas Instrument’s second generation DLP chip, which offers improved brightness and contrast at a fraction of the cost of first-generation DLP sets on the market, they have enjoyed virtual exclusivity in the category. The HLM617W incorporates all the features that have earned Samsung accolades for their DLP sets including a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, DVI connection, 1280 x 720 progressive display resolution for all inputs, a dual tuner picture-in-picture feature, and a DVD (480i/480P) auto sensing component video input. But the HLM617W also adds Faroudja DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing), the highest quality video processing for any video format, Faroudja’s patented auto-sensing 3:2 pull down system, and Samsung’s proprietary DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine) for enhanced contrast, detail, white tone and noise reduction.

The HLM617W will be available in Q1 of 2003 for an MSRP of $5999.
