Motorola Announces First Retail Launch of the DCP501 Home Theater System

Motorola DCP501Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector and Atlanta-based Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE: COX) are making history with the first retail launch of the Motorola DCP501 home theater system in Cox's Hampton Roads, Va. system. Audio Connection, Inc. (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Domes Audio Video Environments (Chesapeake, Va.) -- two CEDIA Home Theater dealers serving the Hampton Roads area -- are the first to retail the Motorola DCP501.

The Motorola DCP501 is packed with the capabilities of a DVD/CD/MP3 player, digital 5.1 audio/video receiver with 5 channels x 100 watts and an AM/FM stereo receiver, and an interactive digital cable receiver -- all integrated into a convenient, space-saving design. Introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2002, it won the CES Innovations Award and has generated cable operator, retailer and consumer interest. This launch marks major milestones for the broadband and home electronics industries, representing the first home-theater product of its kind available for consumer purchase in retail stores. In addition, this retail launch marks significant achievements for the companies involved:

Motorola
For Motorola, the DCP501 retail launch officially marks the Broadband Communications Sector's product portfolio expansion into home-entertainment solutions. Already the market leader in digital cable set-tops and cable modems, this expansion marks a natural progression for the "broadband home" technology provider. The Motorola DCP501 home theater system represents a new product category of home-entertainment devices and applications that Motorola is developing to help consumers use the broadband connection to transform the way they stay entertained, informed, and connected.

The launch of the Motorola DCP501 also represents an interesting return to Motorola, Inc.'s roots, which include the manufacture of entertainment radios and televisions in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Cox
By providing additional features and functionality in one easy-to-install- and-operate unit, the Motorola DCP501 provides more entertainment options and value for consumers. Cox Communications is the first broadband operator to make this kind of digital cable/home-entertainment solution available at retail to its customer base -- giving its customers the choice, value and convenience they desire in an entertainment solution.

By packaging cable as part of an overall home theater system, the Motorola DCP501 helps make Cox's digital cable service an even more attractive alternative to consumers.

Retailers
Audio Connection, Inc. and Domes Audio Environments become the first retail outlets to offer the Motorola DCP501. In addition to the revenue generated by sales of the Motorola DCP501, these retailers expect the Motorola DCP501 to boost store traffic and help increase sales of other home-entertainment products such as stereo speakers, TVs, and cables.

"By offering the Motorola DCP501 directly to consumers, we've created a triple-win situation for operators, retailers, and consumers," said Dwight Sakuma, senior director of retail for Motorola Broadband's digital consumer gateways business. "Consumers now have a product available that offers the ease, convenience and high-performance entertainment experience they desire in a home theater system. Audio Connection and Domes Audio can enjoy increased revenue from the sale of this popular product, plus additional traffic from cable customers. And Cox has the opportunity to position their services alongside the Motorola DCP501 at retail locations, reaching consumers who may have otherwise been swayed to choose satellite over cable."

Audio Connection and Domes Audio are now retailing the Motorola DCP501 home theater system in their store showrooms. Store associates have been trained by Motorola Broadband on the system's unique features, and are available to assist customers as they experience the Motorola DCP501's high-performance, plug 'n play functionality in a home environment. The Motorola DCP501's high-end, advanced audio and video home-entertainment capabilities are designed to exceed the standards of the most demanding electronic enthusiasts. Its single remote control and easy operation help create a more pleasant operating environment for all users -- regardless of their level of home electronics experience.

Upon purchase, customers receive information on how to activate Cox Digital Cable. Additionally, customers who purchase a Motorola DCP501 from these participating retailers and have a subscription to basic cable service will get one free year of digital cable programming from Cox.

Motorola is currently working with several other cable operators and retailers to plan launches in the fourth quarter of 2002.

Since its introduction, operators, retailers, and consumers have anticipated the retail rollout of Motorola's DCP501. The Motorola DCP501 establishes a unique product category that creates a business model designed to benefit both operators and retailers -- while also providing a new home-entertainment solution that offers consumers more choice and more value.

"For years, customers purchasing high-end home theater solutions have asked for a simplifying solution that delivers advanced cable services into their home without requiring an additional piece of equipment", said Doug Stroud, director of retail for Cox's Hampton Roads system. "The Motorola DCP501 allows those consumers to get the advanced digital cable services Cox offers to the marketplace -- including video-on-demand, premium digital channels, digital music channels, an interactive program guide, and others -- in the same piece of advanced equipment that delivers superior DVD and CD performance. And it packages the services together in a more convenient package than is available from satellite."
