Best Rear Projection Digital TV: Hitachi 55-inch DLP

The new Hitachi 55-inch DLP Rear Projection HDTV utilizes Digital Light Processing, a fairly new technology developed by Texas Instruments for delivering a picture to your TV screen. The "DLP" replaces the familiar "tube" used for years and has been adopted by many manufacturers for use in both front and rear projection television sets. DLP has proven to be one of the best new methods yet developed for delivering the high quality pictures that DVD and HDTV demand.
The Hitachi 55DMX01W (which lists for about $10,000) is simply the best we've seen. The DLP projection "engine" allows manufacturers to make big-screen projectors much smaller and less bulky than traditional CRT technology, and Hitachi has made full use of this advantage in both the size and styling of this new set, which is handsome, to say the least. The picture quality is stunning, delivering some of the best images I have ever seen on a large screen. Hitachi utilizes its own proprietary digital processing circuitry, which, on this set, makes ordinary TV look good, DVDs look great, and HDTV even better! If you can find one, snatch it up before the guy behind you grabs it!
