Audio Appetizers

More choices, few opportunities. The internet allows us to see and read about (and salivate over) more audio products than ever before. But, in the Age of Information, it is ironic that there are actually few opportunities to "taste" all that is available. If it is not available at Best Buy or their high-end store, Magnolia, you may never hear many of the audio products you see on the internet--even if you have a specialty audio store in your market.

Whether groceries or flat panel video monitors, American buys most of their products at huge retailers, sometimes called Big Box Stores. These large retailers have an immense array of products, but, there are countless more that can not be displayed. Best Buy/Magnolia is the largest retailer of home entertainment equipment, but, they must carefully choose what appeals to the majority of consumers.

The worldwide selection of brands and models is immense. Perhaps you are looking for something different than what the majority of consumers want. You might be able to find it at an independent audio specialty retailer. But, specialty stores have gone the way of the corner hardware store. Yes, there are a few specialty audio stores left, but, in many markets there is only one still in business. And these small stores can not accommodate and display all the products not shown at the big audio/video chain stores.

Audio manufacturers lose sleep over this problem. So many choices and so few opportunities for the consumer to actually "taste" their products. Earlier we reported on the "buzz" created by a new loudspeaker model, the Magneplanar 1.7 from Magnepan, a small Minnesota company. It is the audio equivalent of your flat panel video monitor-- big, but, very thin (only 2 inches). Magnepan has a novel solution to the small audio manufacturer's dilemma. Magnepan borrowed a marketing idea used by grocery stores of offering tasty little morsels while you shop.

Over 41 years, Magnepan become known to hardcore audiophiles for their large, flat-panel ribbon speakers. As stereo stores from the '70s began to disappear and fewer consumers had a Magneplanar dealer in their city, Magnepan decided to "hand out appetizers". They designed smaller versions of their large models that were beloved by audiophiles. Magnepan is totally upfront about their intentions. They would like you to sample this MMG "appetizer" for 60 days because they know the statistical probability that you will keep it-- or trade it in for one of their larger models.

It appears to be a can't-lose proposal for the consumer. So, why don't other manufacturers do the same? Well, Magnepan explains that their technology lends itself to "appetizers" and this idea just won't work for video monitors or amplifiers. A little "appetizer" amplifier won't do a better job of powering your speakers for a movie or music. To get better sound out of your system, you need a BIGGER amplifier-- not smaller. To get a better picture, you probably want a bigger video monitor.

Of course, the larger Magneplanars models will outperform the "appetizer" MMG model, but, Magnepan makes the claim that it is the technology that is fundamentally different from your box speakers. And that difference in sound reproduction can be "tasted" with a small version of their large models. With a hint of humor, Magnepan "warns" consumers that if you try the MMG, you run the risk of new speakers in your future.

Audio Specialists

Unfortunately, there is a loss of specialists. At one time in Columbia, SC, there were 13 audio shops all offering great audio. Now, we are the last one standing. The problem is the customer who is hurting himself. By visiting the dealer to experience products but then buying on line to save a few bucks, the audio specialist makes no sale and is forced out of business. This, in turn, forces manufacturers out as they have no outlet to demonstrate their product. We all lose.

This is so unfortunate. Mail order cannot make a product sound good and perform to max. Only a dealer with knowledge and experience on the customer's location can. Far too often, I see and hear great equipment performing so poorly due to improper setup and installation. The customer has no idea he is not getting maximum performance. All he knows is he has what was touted in the media as the best for the money, and he "saved" a few bucks. I often cringe when I come across this, as he has not "saved" a thing.

The media is no help either as many of the reviewers either do not know how to set up product for maximum performance, or fail to express this to readers. How many times have I seen a product disparaged in a review, something I had setup and knew that the reviewer had not either set it up correctly, or did not know how to? I have frequently set up the same equipment with excellent results, but had the same results as the reviewer when I set it up less than correctly.

Just as there is no substitute for a Ferrari dealer that knows how to tune your Ferrari before he hands the keys to you, there is no substitute for a dealer that can deliver and set up your equipment properly, including helping to get your room acoustically correct, the biggest and most important component in the chain of your audio.

Support your specialists and you will "save" so much more as they will make your equipment perform like you have never experienced!

Yes, we have 4 different types of Magnepans on display. If you are near Columbia, SC, come on in and bring your favorite music with you. We do video, home theater and more, but our first love is great music. That is what the store was founded on in October of 1972, and what we enjoy most. I loved music so much when I started it in college, I even took up string bass and have been performing ever since.

Music-Wonderful! I can live without my TV, but I cannot live without my music!!!

Auditioning Magneplanars in Sydney, Australia?

I obtained my 1st pair of Magneplanars in the early 1980s, "upgraded" to expensive (boxed) "monitor" loudspeakers, then junked them and returned to these amazing large-surface-area box-less loudspeakers 10 years ago. There is simply no equal to Magneplanar tenderness, punch and accuracy!

My listening room is a crazy "perfect" 1.2 ratio on all 3 sides of 4.8, 3.6 and 2.4m in length, width and height! In spite of that, the Maggies pump out a level of astounding detail and colourlessness!

If you are in the St George region of Sydney, Australia, and wish to audition a pair of amazing Magneplanars in a (bad!) home environment - a worst-case scenario test - drop me an email at skris88@gmail.com.

Cheers!

Dealers

Most of my local dealers have also gone out of business, but this is not totally my fault, when I wanted to buy a NAD amp I offered to make a deal...I was told that they did not discount NAD because of the quality involved that he would give me a discount on the Denon Line but not NAD, I already had a price in mind and was willing to pay more than internet price (for the local option) a little more just not retail...This same experience also happened to me with NHT speakers...I bought the super zero for $99 the local dealer refused to sell me the speakers for that even though his own price was only $10 dollars more...if both of these dealers would have bargained with me they would have seen me as a return customer ( albeit one that always wants a deal) but as it was they lost a lot of business from me although I continued to recommend them to other people locally..

Dealers

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. This, partly I guess, has resulted in Magnepan offering "appetizers". Unfortunately, the retailers are not upto date with buyers trend. They still think that they can "cheat" buyers into paying exhorbitant prices to gain 150% profit margin. If dealers are genuinely selling superior products, they should help the company by cutting profits for quantity sold. I feel for Magnepan because their audio results are way above any conventional speaker setup. But for them to resort to "appetizers", some blame has to fall on the shoulders of greedy dealers. Personally I am a dealer (IT) and a buyer myself, so I know both side of the story. I reside in Australia and unfortunately the wholesalers here are a greedy bunch. It comes from the top I guess...

On a brighter side, Maggies are excellent speakers. I had the opportunity to auditioned their range for a good few months.

As a muso and lover of quality reproduced audio, my opinion is this, if a speaker setup cannot reproduce a live band or ochestra faithfully, with all the nuances and imperfections of the recording studio or live stage then I'm not interested. I'm also a muso, the speaker must try to reproduce the low register string vibration of a piano or the rasp of a live brass instrument or the clear tingling of a shattering glass.

The Maggies have tried to reproduced them. I mentioned try because there are no perfect recording other than hearing it live. Due to its dipole nature and its large wavefront it is closer to the original, in reproduced audio sense. If I am willing to pay to enjoy live music, ochestra or band, I would like that same (or close to) audible experience at home.

The smaller Maggies have less bass, the larger one have more.
