Atlantic Technology Unveils World’s First TriMode Ceiling Speakers
7/23/02 -- Atlantic Technology has introduced the world's first TriMode ceiling speakers for multi-room audio systems and home theater, the IWTS-6 CMS and 8 CMS. In addition to conventional mono or point-source stereo modes, these 6- and 8-inch two-way speakers are designed for use in situations calling for diffuse surround speakers. When configured in Atlantic Technology's TriVector surround mode, 6 CMS and 8 CMS produce the kind of surround soundfields normally unattainable with ceiling mounted speakers, even the types that swivel.
For cinema applications the surround speakers should be diffuse designs positioned to the sides of the listener and/or aimed in such a manner as to create a non-localizable sound field, duplicating the spatial characteristics so vital to accurately reproducing the surround sound experience. Unfortunately, aesthetics sometimes makes ceiling-mounted speakers, which typically produce highly localized soundfields, the only reasonable choice. When set to TriVector mode, Atlantic’s dual voice coil woofer produces mono bass while the two tweeters are driven out-of-phase with each other. The result is limited localization of lower midrange frequencies with a diffuse upper mid-to-high frequency response, overcoming the localization limitations of conventional ceiling speakers.
The Atlantic Technology 6 CMS and 8 CMS each utilize larger then typical ceiling speaker tweeters to allow for lower crossover points, so more of the midrange is diffuse in TriVector mode to maximize their diffuse characteristics. The 8 CMS uses 1-inch silk domes while the 6 CMS includes 3/4-inch Mylar dome units. Both sets of tweeters include Ferrofluid cooling and powerful rare earth Neodymium magnets. The direct-firing, long-throw woofers have extremely light and rigid graphite-loaded polymer cones with rubber surrounds for accurate bass response and high power handling.
The IWTS-6-CMS uses rear-mounted jumpers to select Mono, Stereo, or TriVector operation and measures 9 3/16-inches in diameter and 3-1/2 -inches deep. The 8-CMS features easy access front mounted switches for selection of TriVector, as well as a High Frequency Level adjustment, and measures 10 7/8-inches in diameter, and 3 3/4-inches deep.
The IWTS-8 CMS is available now at an Estimated Street Price of $400 each. The IWTS-6 CMS has an Estimated Street Price of $275 each.
