Acoustic Specialties Debuts 5.1- Channel Home Theater System In A Box

November 2002—Acoustic Specialties, a new name in desktop and home-theater speaker systems, has unveiled its 5.1MS Multimedia Component Speaker System. Utilizing NXT flat-panel technology in combination with a compact and powerful active subwoofer/amplifier/electronics module with Dolby Digital, DTS 5.1-channel decoding and six channels of amplification, the 5.1MS provides a high-performance solution for use with ultra-compact surround home theater audio, PC sound cards with 5.1 capabilities, or the latest generation of surround sound videogame consoles.

The 5.1MS system combines five flat-panel speakers, each no larger or thicker than a magazine, and a compact active subwoofer module. With both Dolby Digital and DTS digital multichannel decoding systems on board, along with a total of 320 watts of dynamic power, the 5.1MS is fully capable of reproducing the most demanding digital soundtracks from DVD movies and HDTV.

The keystone of the Acoustic Specialties 5.1MS’ excellence is its NXT “Distributed-Mode Loudspeaker” design. NXT flat-panel loudspeakers work according to an entirely different principle than conventional moving-coil cone and dome drivers. An NXT flat panel vibrates in a carefully calculated fashion over its entire surface for natural stereo imaging and full coverage over a wide range of seating positions.

The ultra-compact subwoofer of the 5.1MS system measures just 8x15x16 inches. A high-excursion 8-inch conventional driver, computer-aided vented-enclosure design, and cabinet construction of solid, non-resonant MDF wood composites (rather than the thin plastic extrusions used for most competing super-compacts), the 5.1MS sub delivers genuine home theater bass down to an impressive 35 Hz—despite its diminutive size. A two-position input-sensitivity switch permits optimization for either CD-player or typical computer/soundcard signal levels.

All 5.1MS loudspeakers are magnetically shielded to allow for close placement to computer monitors and TVs without danger of magnetically induced color errors. The five flat-panel NXT-technology satellite speakers measure just 11.5x9.5x1.5 inches each and include integral tabletop stands and wall-mount hardware for easy set-up on a desktop, shelf or on-wall location. The 5.1MS system also ships with interchangeable mesh grilles for its five panels, giving the owner the option of black or soft gray to match individual taste or décor.

The 5.1MS multimedia system is controlled either manually or by a supplied infrared remote controller. Input connection hardware to adapt to virtually any music or home-theater source—including DVD and CD players, portables, game consoles, and desktop and laptop systems—is included.
