Motorola First To Receive Bluetooth Certification On Consumer-Targeted Product

Motorola announced today that it has received full certification from the Bluetooth™ standards body for its two Bluetooth PC products, making them the first products to be allowed to carry the Bluetooth trademark. The Bluetooth qualification process ensures that the product complies with the Bluetooth specification, so those products bearing the Bluetooth mark will work together as expected. Both the Motorola PCMCIA card and the USB accessory have been approved and are expected to be available to consumers via PC manufacturers in the fourth quarter of this year.

"Standards and interoperability between products are critical to making this vision reality. We are thrilled to be the first to receive certification on a Bluetooth product the consumer can purchase and use."

Motorola's first Bluetooth-enabled DigitalDNA™ solutions are both PC add-ons designed to provide a wireless link for fast and consistent exchange of information, including data and voice. For example, a PC and a Bluetooth-enabled handheld computer could wirelessly exchange files and synchronize data. Bluetooth wireless technology is predicted to take its first steps as basic cable replacement, but may quickly evolve into more sophisticated applications such as peer-to-peer networking and personal area networking for cell phones, PDA's, computers, printers and other devices.

The software delivered with the PC products uses a Microsoft Windows™ Operating System that allows users familiar with Windows to easily manage Bluetooth transactions. Furthermore, the applications have been integrated in Microsoft Outlook™ e-mail program to allow easy exchange and management of data. The software is also hardware independent, providing customers the option to design their own hardware around Digianswer's software module.

The awarded Motorola certifications closely follow the certification of three key modules by Motorola's Digianswer subsidiary. The Digianswer Bluetooth software suite, transmit / receive module and baseband processor module have all met requirements for interoperability and conformance to the Bluetooth specification. By integrating these certified modules, Motorola was able to move quickly to end-product certification.
