ZAP Launches 60-MPG SMART Car to Auto Industry at NIADA 2004

June 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Independent auto dealers from across the country caught a glimpse of the new 60-MPG SMART Car from Europe, distributed in the United States by ZAP, at NIADA 2004, running today through Saturday at the Hyatt Regency at Reunion in Dallas, Texas.

ZAP is establishing an automotive distribution network in the United States for advanced technology vehicles that utilize energy efficient technologies and alternative fuels. With record gas prices sweeping the country, ZAP has been working to bring the 60-MPG SMART car from Europe to the United States as part of its auto dealer program, which also offers electric cars, motorbikes, ATVs, and other vehicles. In May, the publicly owned Northern California company signed a $10 Million exclusive distribution contract with SMART-Automobile LLC. With over 120,000 sold in Europe and record gas prices, ZAP believes the SMART car will be a hit in the United States.

The National Independent Auto Dealer Association (NIADA) is a national organization made up of over 100,000 auto dealers who own automotive dealerships not affiliated with major automakers. Chief Executive Officer Steve Schneider says ZAP is focusing on independent auto dealers because many are hungry for the opportunity to sell new cars.

"I think the next level for top-performing independent dealers is to become a New Car Dealer," says Schneider. "Many believe that to become a New Car Dealer you need to be very wealthy, very lucky, or know people in high places. But now, by offering advanced transportation, independent dealers can receive a variety of benefits associated to new car dealers."

Schneider says he has been researching advanced technology vehicles for more than five years to establish a distribution network that would assist in putting more fuel-efficient cars into the hands of consumers. Through his distribution company, Voltage Vehicles (VV), he has signed exclusive automotive distribution contracts with manufacturers around the world. Under these contracts, VV has the ability to issue a New Car Dealer license. Schneider says that ZAP vehicles will be a great draw for existing dealers because they offer a new profit center while offering an alternative to consumers looking to save money on higher gas prices. At the same time, the New Car Dealers license allows them to get improved financing and better terms for the dealership and its customers.

SMART-Automobile LLC is an independent, privately-held company that oversees the direct importation and modification of automobiles to meet U.S. standards.
